With the AIPAC convention in full swing and last week’s multiple missions to Israel having returned to New York, local supporters who missed out have another opportunity to make a difference. It does not involve a flight to Israel or a trip to Capitol Hill. This past weekend, Rep. Grace Meng launched her 2018 reelection campaign, flanked by fellow party members and friends.
In this overwhelmingly Democratic district, her reelection is all but assured. Nevertheless, to appear on the ballot even an incumbent needs to secure the necessary number of petition signatures. With the support of the John F. Kennedy Democratic Club, residents of Kew Gardens Hills can pick up petitions along with a list of registered party members to see which of their neighbors are qualified to sign the forms. Petitioners can then collect signatures from among their neighbors and fellow congregants.
To have good turnout at the polls this November certainly would demonstrate the Jewish community’s voice, but it is the time-consuming, cost-free, and vital prerequisite of petitioning that makes the difference in keeping Grace Meng in office.
As a leading voice of support for Israel in Congress, Meng voted against the Iran Nuclear Deal in defiance of then-president Barack Obama, and continues to ensure that Israel receives the necessary funding and technology to defend itself.
