The inauguration of Joe Biden in January of 2021 placed an enormous “Come On In!” sign at the southern border. Since that time, millions of people have illegally crossed the border and were released into the country - if they were detected at all. While DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas may claim that the border is “secure,” it is without a doubt as porous as it has ever been.
This never mattered to blue-city Democrats, however, who sat comfortably away from the border and criticized the communities that were being hardest hit by the Biden administration’s feckless policies as being bigots and xenophobes. They declared themselves “sanctuary cities” and wore sackcloth and ashes when President Trump began to build a wall or deport illegals. They even took specific rights, only granted to citizens, and began to give them to those who should never have been in the country.
New York City was the latest, largest example of this. Late last year, the New York City Council overwhelmingly approved a bill to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections 30 days after establishing residency. Mayor Eric Adams, despite being against the bill when he was campaigning, supported it once he was elected. “I believe that New Yorkers should have a say in their government, which is why I have and will continue to support this important legislation,” the mayor said in a statement in January. “I look forward to bringing millions more into the democratic process,” he added.
State and federal Republican leaders immediately filed suit, asserting that according to the state’s constitution, only citizens are allowed to vote. A State Supreme Court judge agreed with them, and in late June, the law (which had yet to take effect) was struck down.
So Mayor Adams was now stuck in a quandary. Nearly a million noncitizens within his jurisdiction could be used to further his and his party’s political agenda. Meanwhile, the cost of the policies that Democrats championed at the southern border were beginning to be felt in his city, 2,000 miles away. In addition, Hispanics have been polling incredibly unfavorably towards Democrats in the last few years. Apparently, they don’t like being called “latinx” and having radical woke progressive policies pushed on them.
So Adams throws them under the bus, and cries out to the Biden administration to do something to help ease NYC of the burden of all the illegals flooding the city. Adams claims that the city’s homeless shelters are overflowing because it has an additional 3,000 illegals.
If Adams can’t handle 3,000 people in a city of over 8 million, what chance do states like Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas have when millions of people are flooding into their small towns? Adams doesn’t care about those states, because they voted for Trump. Let them handle it.
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas wasn’t taking the abuse from Biden anymore. In April, he announced that he would be bussing illegals to Washington, D.C. Let the capital handle the results of their own policies. The move was mocked by then-Press-Secretary Jen Psaki at the time. Yet Abbott stuck to his word. Since then, over 5,100 illegals have been bussed over there, having DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to also seek help from the federal government.
The Biden administration has destroyed the concept of American sovereignty, with the massive influx of migrants coming into the nation without plan or purpose. Democrats like Bowser and Adams, along with others in blue states and cities around the country, were cheering for these policies. Yet the moment that the “demographics is destiny” argument seemed to fail, and the calculation of “browner skin, lefter vote” could no longer be counted on as political gospel, these people have lost their usefulness. This is why there are more articles like “Mayra Flores and the Rise of the Far-Right Latina” coming out of the New York Times. This is also why, for the first time in recent memory, Democrats want these people out of their cities. No vote, no stay.
