Most women want their eyes to be the focal point of their face. Eyes are an expressive feature and one that most are willing to spend time and effort to enhance. The illusion of the shape usually comes from the lash line, and that is where you need to concentrate the color. No matter what shape your eyes are, the goal is to make them appear wide open.

Applying eyeliner correctly is the key to creating a beautiful eye. You can base your technique on the shape of your eye, while adding depth and luminosity with a trio of shadows. The following tips will help customize your eye shadow placement.

Small: Line the inner rim of the lower lid with a white or light blue liner. Adding more light around the eye makes it appear larger.

Round: Elongate your eyes by lining the outer two thirds of the upper and bottom lash lines and join them at the outer corner. The line should be a bit thicker at the outer corner and turn up slightly at the end. Concentrate mascara at the outer corner of the upper lashes.

Close set: To add illusion of space between your eyes, keep the emphasis on the outer corners. Use a dark liner on the outer quarter of the top and bottom lashes and add lots of mascara to the outer lashes only.

Wide set: To downplay space between your eyes, use a darker liner on the inner corners and a slightly lighter color for the rest of the lash lines. Avoid sweeping eye shadow out to the temples. Instead, let your shadow fade out before it reaches the end of the eye.

Asian: To accentuate the eyes, draw a pencil line from the middle of the upper lash lines to the outer corners and all along the bottom lids, then smudge. Curl lashes and wear mascara on top and bottom lashes to define the eyes.

Almond: This shape can handle just about any look. For daytime, you can lightly mark the entire top lash line and dust a neutral shadow over the lid. For night, trace the top and bottom lines and smudge for a smoky look.
