The Left Hates Science
There’s a very simple reason why I don’t trust the Left with the subject of science: because leftists have never really believed in science, and still don’t. What they actually believe in is pseudo-science, and they elevate the environment above the lives of human beings. Don’t believe me? Consider the following three examples.
- Banning DDT. DDT was a chemical developed in 1939 that was used as an insecticide and was critical in protecting Americans during World War II from typhus and malaria. It has since been used all over the globe and has saved millions of lives throughout. As Mark Levin noted in his book Liberty and Tyranny: “Journalist and bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell recounted the successful eradication campaigns waged in Italy, Taiwan, the Caribbean, the Balkans, parts of northern Africa, the South Pacific, Australia, and India: ‘In India, where malaria infected an estimated 75 million and killed 800,000 every year, fatalities had dropped to zero by the early sixties. Between 1945 and 1965, DDT saved millions – even tens of millions – of lives around the world, perhaps more than any other man-made drug or chemical before or since.’” Levin further noted that “in 1970 the National Academy of Sciences announced that ‘to only a few chemicals does man owe as great a debt as to DDT. In little more than two decades DDT has prevented 500 million human deaths due to malaria that would have otherwise been inevitable.’”
However, in 1962, non-scientist and pesticide opponent Rachel Carson published her infamous book Silent Spring “allegedly” showing that DDT was bad for the environment and caused cancer in children. And as you’d expect, the Left went apocalyptic over the supposed bombshell study, and tirelessly lobbied the government to ban DDT, which eventually it did after the creation of the EPA in 1972. But shortly after her book was published, it was determined by a wide consensus in the scientific community that the study was essentially junk science, and was subsequently refuted countless times by real, certified scientists. But by then it was too late, and with the banning of DDT, the mortality rate increased dramatically in third-world countries, and millions of people yet again died as a result. Only about a decade or so ago did the scientific community again begin to revisit the benefits of DDT. As Levin noted, “In 2002, the American Council on Science and Health reported that 300 million to 500 million people suffer from malaria each year, 90 percent occurring in Africa. It is the number one killer of children there. Overall, the ban has resulted in the deaths of millions.” This was all in the name of science and the environment.
- Lighter cars and automobile fatalities. There was another fatal consequence of Leftists’ elevation of the environment over human lives. In 1973, the Arabs imposed an oil embargo on the US in retaliation for its support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War. One of the responses to the embargo was the government imposition of Corporate Average Fuel Economy or CAFE, standards on automobiles in 1975. Levin noted: “Its proponents argued that more efficient cars would cut gasoline use. But this position was always counterintuitive. More efficient cars reduce the per-mile cost of driving, enabling consumers to pay less than they otherwise would for driving more.” The standards never succeeded in having any significant positive effects on the environment, and actually increased foreign oil imports.
But the one thing the standards did succeed in doing was killing tens of thousands of people. How? It’s called physics. In order for the automobile industry to meet the new standards, it had to reduce the size and weight of the vehicles. Automobiles now contained more plastic and aluminum than before. This made vehicles lighter than before, which meant that the chances of someone dying in an automobile accident increased exponentially.
And the facts bear this out. As Levin further noted, “In 1989, analysts at the Brookings Institution and Harvard University estimated that 2,000 to 3,900 lives are lost and 20,000 serious injuries occur each year in traffic accidents resulting from smaller, lighter cars.” He also cites the Competitive Enterprise Institute that examined traffic fatality data in 1997 and concluded “that CAFE standards caused between 2,600 and 4,500 deaths in 1997.” Moreover, USA Today analyzed similar data and reported “that 4,600 people have died in crashes they would have survived in bigger, heavier cars…since 1975.” Additionally, “[i]n 2001, a National Academy of Sciences panel reported that the down-weighting and downsizing of light vehicles in the 1970s and early 1980s, partly due to CAFE standards, probably resulted in an additional 1,300 to 2,600 traffic fatalities in 1993.” This was all in the name of science and the environment.
- The rejection of biology. There’s one more example worth mentioning here, showing again the Left’s clear infidelity to science. This time, it manifests in their open rejection of an entire branch of science called biology. The Left’s very unscientific view is that gender is on a “spectrum,” or that it’s non-binary. This means in simple English that, contrary to the biological fact that a person with two X chromosomes is female and a person with an X and Y chromosome is male, Leftists believe that science doesn’t actually determine a person’s gender. So what does? Answer: their feelings. You see, because certain people “feel” that they really should be the opposite gender, or they “feel” that they don’t belong to any gender at all, that just makes it so. If I feel like identifying as 65 today (I’m 24) and wish to collect my Social Security benefits right now, I should be able to do that, right? Or what if I want to identify as a rabbit – do I still have to pay taxes to the government? I’m not really sure at this point, as all of this is just getting more confusing. And, by the way, as of this writing, there are approximately 75 genders to choose from. So now, people’s “feelings” trump science, which is somehow all in the name of science and the environment, or something like that.
So, the next time leftists tell you that they believe in science, just give them a kind reminder that because of their completely reckless and irresponsible pseudo-scientific policies and elevation of the environment and feelings over the lives of human beings, hundreds of millions of people have died as a result.
As the great Ben Shapiro always says, “Facts don’t care about your feelings.”
In response to Alan Fenster’s Letter to the Editor last week, the decision to change my mentions of “Christmas” to “Xmas” was made by the editorial staff after I submitted my article.
To address his other remark, I would like to say that Christians have never been persecuted as a religion by Jews as Jews have historically been persecuted by Christians. We have had a number of horrific incidents: the massacres during the Crusades, for example, as well as the custom of Jews staying home on Christmas Eve for their own safety from being attacked by revelers. Thank God, we live in a time of unprecedented peace with our non-Jewish neighbors; our host country guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of worship, and freedom of religion, and actively works to protect us from anti-Semitism. Sure, the decorations look pretty. But I can’t help but feel a little discomfort at the history behind the merry expressions of cheer and joy.
