Nineteenth century English politician Lord Acton is credited with the quote “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, with her recent political antics, is the poster person describing this quote. Candidly, I’m embarrassed by the way Pelosi is manipulating the Congress since she regained the speakership last month. Her position is a prestigious one that should be used for the betterment of our country and not to serve her illusions of grandeur. Instead of working on much needed legislation in so many areas, she is pompously spending her time playing “Got ya” with President Trump. Don’t get me wrong; the President is also demeaning his office with the shenanigans that have been going on this past month. I think that they both should grow up and do the people’s business or land up, as I say to my grandchildren, in the naughty corner.
Politics of 2020 is not what is important now. Issues pertaining to 2019 are what are paramount. But good old Nancy is consumed with discrediting the President. She has forgotten what her role as leader is and doesn’t seem to take it seriously enough to deal with the problems at hand.
Her appointments to the various House committees leave one wanting, and questioning her sense of judgment. For example, Representative Ilhan Omar, who is Muslim, strongly objects to Israel and supports the BDS movement. Yet, she, out of all people, was put on the prestigious House Foreign Affairs Committee. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was put on the House Financial Services Committee that is now being chaired by Maxine Waters. (Maybe it is time to put our money under our mattresses if those two are in charge of the banks.) Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, a virulent anti-Israel woman who displays a Middle Eastern map with the State of Israel being replaced with Palestine, was put on the prestigious House Oversight Committee along with Ocasio-Cortez. These appointments are making a mockery out of the importance of the House of Representatives. They are obviously unqualified for those committees and, as far as I’m concerned, unqualified to be representatives in Congress.
Pelosi is just busy wielding her power and not thinking about what’s best for our country. Case in point is the shabby treatment of three-term Congresswoman Kathleen Rice of New York. Nancy arrogantly didn’t name Rep. Rice to the House Judiciary Committee as a vendetta because Rice did not support her for Speaker; but Rep. Rice is a former prosecutor who is inordinately qualified (as opposed to her other appointments) to be on the panel that oversees everything from impeachment and guns to immigration. That shows how petty Pelosi really is.
Another example of her pettiness and political gamesmanship was how she disinvited the President from delivering the State of the Union address during the government shutdown. After being highly criticized for that insult to the presidency, Pelosi has now invited him to make the speech on February 5.
Pelosi has also undistinguished herself by criticizing the proposed wall at our southern border and refusing to allow the allocation of funds to build it by saying “it’s immoral, expensive. Ineffective and not something people do between countries.” This is only being done to embarrass President Trump and tie his hands on a serious national security issue.
According to an opinion piece written by Sean Hannity of Fox News, “This is about so much more than politics. This is about your safety, your security. This is about the security of the country and literally life and death. This is about saving American lives that are impacted by gangs, cartels, drugs, and violence… Ninety percent of the heroin that gets into this country comes from that border. It’s about 10,000 new migrants now obtaining visas from the government of Mexico to travel through the country in order to make their way north into our country because we have unsecured borders.”
To help Pelosi see the light, a group of women whose husbands patrol America’s southern border along the banks of the Rio Grande have invited her to come to Texas so she can see first-hand why a barrier between the US and Mexico is desperately needed. Jill Demanski issued the invitation in a letter posted on Facebook. Demanski added, “We’d also appreciate if you’d stop pretending that you care about federal workers. If you do, you would care for their safety, not just their paychecks. We can hold out a while longer if it means our husbands and communities are safer.” It is doubtful whether Nancy Pelosi will take them up on it. She would be afraid to go down there to see the actual truth.
Of course, the Speaker is not averse to going on trips. She is finally getting scrutiny about her spending $2 million on junkets in the past two years on the taxpayers’ dime. Nancy Pelosi is one of the wealthiest members of Congress. Her net worth is reported to be between $42 million and $199 million – but she insists on using the most luxurious Air Force jets for her travels.
A perfect example of her typical arrogance and sense of self-importance was the time Pelosi took an “official” taxpayer-paid trip to Italy with four of her family members along with her in August 2015. The delegation dined at high-class restaurants with five-course meals and the best wines and liquors. Of course, she staged the public nature of the trip by visiting the Pope and the Vatican.
It is time for this schnorrer to stop squandering taxpayers’ funds on junkets and deal with what she is actually being paid to do with our money. During this three-week respite from the government shutdown that President Trump has issued, Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats must come to the conference table and respond to the President’s proposal.
She doesn’t seem to have time for that, but instead has totally lost her mind and her senses as she is busy wielding a vote to remove “So help you G-d” from the oaths administered to witnesses appearing before the Natural Resources Committee, for starters, that will probably be the template for other committees to follow suit.
Nancy Pelosi is on such a power trip that she has totally emasculated Senator Schumer. I feel so bad for our Senior Senator from New York who is being treated so disrespectfully as he stands next to her. It is obvious that she demands to be the boss.
There is no question that “power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Nancy Pelosi seems to be drunk with power, and it is time to knock her down a peg or two.
