Dr. Eli Landau a”h was a beloved long-time resident of Kew Gardens Hills with a valued dental practice visited by locals. Dr. Landau was a fine professional man with noteworthy mannerisms. In his soft-spoken way, he would often greet passerby with his signature smile and ask of their wellbeing. Dr. Landau was a quiet, humble, private individual who shied away from making a big deal about happenings. Many have noted that over the years he would open his office for emergency appointments, always available to help the community he held so dear. He frequented Bais Yosef D’Ulem and had a connection with various neighborhood rabbonim.

MTA talmidim, rebbeim, and faculty have done an incredible job adjusting to the new online learning platform, MTA@Home, where the yeshivah joins talmidim at home to learn, rather than feeling the distance of remote learning. HaGaon HaRav Aharon Walkin zt”l represented the true spirit of Queens, stemming from his upbringing. Rav Walkin was one to never mince words and always said things straight, as they were relishing in Hashem’s sacred Torah. Rav Walkin presided as the rosh yeshivah of the Chazaq Beis Midrash Bais Nosson Meir and the rosh kollel of Kollel Zichron Moshe V’Leah, both in Queens, where his genuine warmth was felt, and was the rav of Khal Bais Aharon in Lakewood, New Jersey, where he officially resided. Rav Walkin’s infectious smile helped one ease into learning. It was the Rosh Yeshiva’s passion to help his disciples, from students to professionals, devote their assigned times to the Torah. His profound involvement with the advancement of our community is interconnected with his own life experiences, which paint a colorful picture of American Jewry.

Harvey Sheff of Kew Gardens Hills passed away at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens on March 31 from the coronavirus. The 59-year-old was inducted into Yeshiva University’s Basketball Hall of Fame on May 23, 2019.

In the New York State 2020-21 budget passed today and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, the legislature included a key piece of legislation proposed by Governor Cuomo and strongly supported by Agudath Israelof America.
