What do you do when you collide with an annoying person? All positions for annoying people in my life have been filled. Applicants need not apply, thank you. Do you secretly call them disturbed or disordered? Truth be told, most of what is misaligned and off-center within us and others is simple immaturity.

When I say the word “addict,” no doubt certain images come to your mind. You may visualize a homeless, unkempt person or an alcoholic who drinks daily. Then again, I’m sure the only thing you want negative in your life is a drug test. The truth is that there are forms of addiction that are less overtly dramatic, yet damaging nonetheless.

Of course, we wish that no harm will befall us in this life, although it is likely that it will. Can we simply derive satisfaction or comfort from not being sure that it will happen? Optimism surely helps us reduce stress and suffering. It is a healthy coping mechanism for dealing with our unknown future.

Do you feel permanently susceptible to bouts of depression, anxiety, or anger? How do you manage your fragility and vulnerability? Start by acknowledging your feelings, sweet friends. Please remain patient and unafraid in the face of strong feelings. You may never be fully impervious to negative emotions, but you can learn healthy patterns of thinking. I know: You’re trying to think how you can think of what you want to think. I’m confused. No, wait…maybe I’m not.

Do you have inner drive and self-motivation? Perhaps you seek excellent grades in school and aim for that promotion at work. I know. Your parents call it “bad grades,” but you call it “still passing.” Listen, kids. A bad teacher is no excuse for bad grades, Google knows it all. You’re up at dawn and your house is always in order. My kitchen cleaner says: “For a clean kitchen.” So I can’t use it. Mine is dirty. Then again, did you ever get excited about a clean sponge at the kitchen sink? When you cleaned your office, you just meant that you made a pathway from your door to your desk. I get it.

Are you up till all hours studying for an exam? Hey, I will not sleep until I find a cure for my insomnia. Are you working incessantly or trying to build your own brand? You hardly have a moment to breathe. Do you find this satisfying or enriching in any way? Do you even ask yourself that?
