The pasuk from T’hilim (Chapter 3:2-4) poignantly captures the emotional turmoil and the profound faith of David HaMelech. He begins with an expression of distress: “Hashem, how many are my tormentors! The great rise up against me. The great say of my soul: ‘There is no deliverance for him from G-d,’ Selah. But You, Hashem, are a shield about me, my glory, and He Who raises up my head.” Despite the severity of his trials, David acknowledges that Hashem is his protector and the source of his dignity and strength.
This passage reminds us of an essential truth: It is easy to forget Hashem’s omnipresence and His control over all events. The yeitzer ha’ra, or evil inclination, often tries to convince us of our unworthiness and that Divine help is unattainable for us. We may witness miracles in others’ lives but struggle to believe that we are also deserving of Hashem’s intervention.
The key lies in our inner perspective. A shift in our hashkafah, or worldview, can transform our external reality. By recognizing Hashem as our shield and source of glory, we can elevate our spirits and face challenges with renewed strength. Even in times of yisurim (suffering), when Hashem seems hidden and relates to us through din (judgment), His chesed (kindness) and rachamim (mercy) remain ever-present.
Every individual holds immense value and importance, endowed with a Divine neshamah (soul) that Hashem continually sustains. Hashem’s involvement in our lives is constant, whether or not we perceive it. He alone grants wisdom, understanding, peace, and joy. To merit these blessings, we must genuinely strive to draw closer to Hashem, nurturing a sincere desire for Divine connection.
