Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz participated in a Queens Community Network event, hosted by the New York Board of Rabbis, to address the borough’s ongoing fight against hate crimes. Speaking before a gathering of rabbinical and spiritual leaders, she outlined the measures her office has taken to combat antisemitism and enhance the security of all Queens residents.

DA Katz acknowledged the harsh reality that antisemitic incidents have surged both nationally and locally over the past two years. Between October 7, 2023, and October 7, 2024, New York City experienced a staggering 67% rise in anti-Jewish attacks. In Queens, the rise was 16%, with nearly half—49%—of all reported hate crimes in the borough targeting the Jewish community.

“These numbers are unacceptable,” DA Katz stated. “We refuse to allow hate to take root in Queens. My office remains steadfast in holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring that every community feels protected.”

Her office’s approach includes enhancing law enforcement strategies, expanding community outreach, and implementing educational initiatives to proactively prevent bias-driven crimes. DA Katz underscored the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and local organizations in confronting this disturbing trend.

The event served as a crucial platform for discussing actionable steps to curb antisemitism and reinforce a borough-wide commitment to unity and security.

Attendees included Rabbi Mayer Waxman, Executive Director of QJCC; Rabbi Avrohom Hecht, Executive Director of Project Lead; Rabbi Judah Kerbel of Queens Jewish Center in Forest Hills; and Benjamin Zaientz of Young Israel of New Hyde Park, among other distinguished community leaders.
