Ushpizin, an Aramaic word that means “guests,” refers to the seven special guests who come to visit us in the sukkah, one for each of the seven days of the festival: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and King David. During Sukkos, the souls of the seven great leaders of Israel actually leave Gan Eden to partake in the divine light of the earthly Sukkos. Each day of Sukkos, all seven souls are present, but each takes his turn to lead the other six. And on the seventh day, Hoshana Rabbah, our sukkah will be visited by David HaMelech, King David.

The midah of King David is malchus – kingship. Reb Tzadok HaKohen of Lublin connects King David with Shabbos. Shabbos is the seventh day of the week and David is the seventh of the Ushpizin. Indeed, one of the hallmarks of our acceptance of God as king is our observance of the Shabbos, down to the minutest detail.

Reb Tzadok points out that a significant part of King David’s legacy to us is the ability for the individual to rise and ascend, irrespective of the group. When a Jew accepts God as King, then prayer becomes a very important part of his life. And there is no prayer service without some verse or chapter from T’hilim. We individually and collectively raise our spirits and our souls as we send the words of T’hilim gliding heavenward.
