Parshas Va’eschanan is always read on Shabbos Nachamu, the Shabbos after Tishah B’Av. After sitting on the floor and mourning the Churban, we hear the comforting words of the Navi: “Nachamu, nachamu ami”—“Comfort, comfort My nation.”
The name Va’eschanan means “and I pleaded.” Moshe Rabbeinu continued to daven even when the answer he wanted did not come. He teaches us that a Yid never gives up on tefilah. Even when things seem impossible, we continue to turn to the Ribbono Shel Olam with hope and emunah.
This week’s parshah also contains the Aseres HaDibros and the Shema. The words “Shema Yisrael, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad” remind us that Hashem is always with us. Even during painful and confusing times, everything is part of His plan.
This is also the special koach of Tehillim. David HaMelech gives us the words to cry out to Hashem, strengthen our emunah, and find comfort. No tefilah is ever wasted, and no Yid is ever alone.
As we move from mourning toward nechamah, may our Tehillim and tefilos bring refuos, yeshuos, and protection for all of Klal Yisrael. May we soon experience the greatest nechamah with the coming of Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash, bimheirah b’yameinu, amen.
