As we approach Rosh HaShanah, we prepare to stand before Hashem on the days when we proclaim Him as King and turn to Him in tefillah for the coming year.

On the first day of Rosh HaShanah, we read about Sarah Imeinu. After many years of waiting, the Torah tells us, “V’Hashem pakad es Sarah ka’asher amar” — “Hashem remembered Sarah as He had said.” Sarah was blessed with Yitzchak at a time when the fulfillment of that promise had seemed beyond what was naturally possible.

The Haftarah tells us about Chana, who also waited for a child and poured out her heart before Hashem in tefillah. Hashem remembered Chana, and she was blessed with Shmuel.

These two stories are especially meaningful on Rosh HaShanah. They remind us that Hashem hears tefillah, that everything is ultimately in His hands, and that a person should never stop turning to Him for rachamim and yeshuah.

Throughout Rosh HaShanah, we ask, “Zochreinu l’chaim, Melech chafetz bachaim” — “Remember us for life, O King Who desires life.” As we say Tehillim together, we ask Hashem to remember every person who needs a refuah, every person waiting for a yeshuah, and all of Klal Yisrael for life, health, peace, and brachah.

We daven especially for our chayalim and all those protecting Am Yisrael. May Hashem guard them from harm, grant them shemirah and hatzlachah, and bring them safely home to their families.

As a new year begins, may our Tehillim and tefillos be accepted b’rachamim u’v’ratzon. May Hashem send complete refuos to all those who are ill, yeshuos to all those in need, and protection and peace to all of Klal Yisrael.

May we all be written and sealed for a shanah tovah u’mesukah — a year of good health, simchah, parnassah, nachas, shalom, and besoros tovos. And may we merit the ultimate yeshuah with the coming of Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash, bimheirah b’yameinu, amen.
