As we approach Sukkos, there is a beautiful message in the mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah.

For an entire week, we leave the security of our homes and move into a temporary dwelling. The walls are simple, the roof is made of s’chach, and yet Sukkos is specifically called Zman Simchaseinu—the time of our joy.

The sukkah reminds us that our true security does not come from strong walls or from feeling that everything is under our control. It comes from Hashem.

The sukkah also reminds us of the Ananei HaKavod, the Clouds of Glory that surrounded and protected Klal Yisrael in the Midbar. They had no permanent homes and did not know exactly what the journey ahead would bring, yet they were constantly surrounded by Hashem’s protection.

Sukkos asks us to carry that same emunah into the new year.

We spend so much time planning, worrying, and trying to create certainty. Then we sit beneath the s’chach and remember that, ultimately, we are in Hashem’s hands.

Perhaps that is part of the simchah of Sukkos. True simchah does not come from knowing that everything will happen exactly as we planned. It comes from knowing that whatever the year brings, we are never outside of Hashem’s care.

May we merit to enter the sukkah with true simchah, feel Hashem’s protection surrounding us, and carry that sense of emunah and closeness with us throughout the year.

May Hashem bless all of Klal Yisrael with a year of health, peace, brachah, yeshuos, besoros tovos, and true simchah.
