As we read Parshas Vayera, we learn a powerful lesson from Avraham Avinu about what it means to truly care for another person.

At the beginning of the parsha, Avraham is recovering from his bris milah. He is in pain, yet when he sees three travelers approaching, he immediately runs to greet them and prepares food for them with extraordinary care.

Avraham does not wait until he feels better, until life is easier, or until the timing is more convenient. Even in a moment of his own discomfort, he notices that someone else may need something from him.

This is one of the defining qualities of Avraham Avinu: chesed was not simply something he did when circumstances allowed it. It was part of who he was.

There are times when we are carrying our own worries, waiting for a yeshuah, davening for a refuah, or dealing with challenges that others may not even know about. In those moments, it can be natural to turn inward.

Parshas Vayera teaches us that sometimes, even while we are waiting for our own prayers to be answered, we still have the ability to bring brachah into someone else’s life.

A kind word, a phone call, a tefilah for another person, tzedakah, or simply noticing someone who needs encouragement can become an act of tremendous chesed.

And perhaps that is part of the greatness of Avraham Avinu: he teaches us that we do not have to wait until everything in our own lives is perfect before we can bring goodness into the world.

May we be zocheh to follow in the ways of Avraham Avinu, to see the people around us, to recognize opportunities for chesed, and to bring light to others even during our own difficult moments.

In the z’chus of our tefilos, our chesed, and the kindnesses we do for one another, may Hashem bless all of Klal Yisrael with refuos sheleimos, yeshuos, besoros tovos, protection, and much brachah.
