A century of life – defined by courage, education, and unwavering service – was celebrated with heartfelt warmth at the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Hills, as Jack Alkana marked his 100th birthday. The joyous milestone, observed this past Monday, June 23, honored a man whose legacy continues to inspire all who know him.

I first met Jack at Margaret Tietz a number of years ago, and when Linda Spiegel, the Center’s Director of Public Affairs, invited me to attend his centennial celebration, I was truly honored to return.

Jack married his beloved wife, Molly, in 1949, and together they built a life filled with love, strength, and shared purpose. They remained happily married for over 70 years, until Molly’s passing just two years ago. A cousin quietly shared how deeply Jack cherished their marriage - a bond that defined much of his personal life even as he gave so much to his country and community.

The program was beautifully curated by Ricardo Rosa Sola, Director of Recreation, who crafted a patriotic military theme in tribute to Jack’s proud service in the US Navy during World War II. Red, white, and blue artwork lined the walls throughout the venue, and a large banner behind Jack proudly celebrated his 100th birthday. Atop the grand piano rested an elegant array of framed photographs: snapshots from across the decades of Jack’s remarkable life. A striking black-and-white portrait of Jack in uniform, alongside a preserved wartime letter, offered a powerful visual tribute to a life of sacrifice and service.

The event drew an outpouring of love from residents, family, and friends. Among those in attendance was Rabbi Zavel Perlman, the Center’s full-time spiritual guide, offering his presence and support. Remarks were delivered by Linda Spiegel, who reflected on Jack’s impact on the community and the deep admiration felt by all who know him.

Also present was Izzy Zeigler, a longtime attendee of the Center’s Shabbos and Yom Tov minyanim and an alumnus of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim. Izzy brought along his young children, adding a meaningful multigenerational touch to the celebration.

Following a spirited round of applause and nostalgic music led by Isaac of Kew Gardens Hills, a birthday cake was shared with all attendees. But the highlight of the program was a special unveiling: Jack’s original Navy uniform, freshly pressed and on proud display for the first time in more than 80 years. It stood as a powerful symbol of his patriotism and resilience.

Two distinguished honors were presented in recognition of Jack’s extraordinary life:

  • A Congressional Proclamation, from Congress Member Grace Meng, officially declared June 23, 2025, as “Jack Alkana Day” throughout New York’s Sixth Congressional District. The proclamation praised Jack’s enlistment at age 17, his valor aboard a bomber ship during World War II, and his decades-long career in education, culminating in his role as Principal of the Manhattan Occupational Training Center and later as a Special Education Administrator.
  • A New York State Assembly Citation, from Assemblymember Sam Berger of the 27th District, commended Jack’s service to the country, his steadfast dedication to students with special needs, and the enduring legacy he has built within the Queens community.

Though Jack’s official birthday falls on Friday, June 27, the early celebration at Margaret Tietz served as a powerful and poignant tribute to a life well-lived.

Jack Alkana’s story is one of sacrifice, integrity, and devotion: to his country, his students, and his community. As we celebrate this rare centennial milestone, we are reminded that the values Jack embodies – honor, humility, and heart – remain timeless.

Happy 100th Birthday, Jack. May Hashem continue to bless you with good health, joy, and the admiration of all who are privileged to know you.
