More than a month after Young Israel of Jamaica Estates and Young Israel of Holliswood were targeted in a pair of hate crime attacks, the NYPD has released surveillance footage of two individuals sought in connection with the incidents.
The release marks a new stage in an investigation previously covered prominently by the Queens Jewish Link. Both incidents occurred on July 16 and have been investigated by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force.
According to police, two individuals approached Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, at 83-10 188th Street, at 11:44 p.m. and threw bags containing motor oil at the front entrance, damaging property. The suspects then fled on foot before entering a dark-colored SUV and leaving the area.
Later that night, Young Israel of Holliswood, at 86-25 Francis Lewis Boulevard, was targeted in a similar manner. Police said two individuals threw bags containing motor oil at the building before fleeing on foot.
The NYPD has linked the two incidents as a criminal mischief pattern involving hate crimes. The newly released footage gives the public its clearest look yet at the individuals investigators are seeking to identify. As of publication, no arrests have been announced.
From the outset, leaders of both congregations made clear that the attacks would not disrupt Jewish life in their communities.
Adam Orlow, president of Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, said at the time that the incident would not intimidate the congregation or change who they are. Rabbi Dov Lerner likewise emphasized that the community would continue gathering and davening together. At Young Israel of Holliswood, Rabbi Moshe Taub stressed that his congregation would continue to worship openly and proudly.
Anyone who recognizes the individuals or has information about their movements that night is urged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip to @NYPDTips. Community members may also contact the Queens Shmira 24/7 Hotline at 718-329-4444.
The Queens Jewish Link will continue to follow the investigation as police work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
