The Hashkamah Minyan of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills is in its 50th year of existence, a milestone that will be celebrated by the Young Israel in the fall. The formation of the minyan was spearheaded by Rabbi Avraham Schechter, Stanley Berger, and Sol Bess. Over the years, several hundred men (and a few women) have been an integral part of the minyan, some for a few months and others for decades.

Defendant Faces 25 Years-to-Life in Prison

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Thomas Abreu has been charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, and weapon possession in a Saturday morning shooting spree that killed an 86-year-old man and injured three others in Queens and Brooklyn. Abreu shot at multiple random people in multiple locations throughout Queens and Brooklyn while on his scooter.

Linda Mirels Named President And Marc Rowan To Chair The Board

UJA-Federation of New York announced that Linda Mirels has been named president and Marc Rowan will serve as chair of the board. The appointments were approved by the Board of Directors and are effective July 1, 2023. Mirels and Rowan succeed the previous president, Amy A. B. Bressman, and the chair of the board, David Moore, whose terms concluded on June 30. UJA-Federation of New York is the largest local philanthropy in the world, helping 4.5 million people annually while funding a network of nonprofits, including social service organizations, Jewish institutions, and community agencies in New York, Israel, and 70 countries.
