In our daily lives, the fulfillment of one mitzvah often paves the way for another. This principle is vividly illustrated in Parshas B’Haaloscha, where the unique mitzvah of Pesach Sheini is introduced.

During the first anniversary of the Exodus from Egypt, some individuals were distressed because their state of impurity barred them from participating in the upcoming Pesach celebration. They felt excluded and diminished, questioning why they should miss out on this significant and joyous event.

Moshe Rabbeinu, uncertain of how to address their concerns, sought guidance from Hashem. Acknowledging the legitimacy of their feelings, Hashem established Pesach Sheini, a second Pesach to be observed one month later, specifically for those who were impure during the initial celebration.

Sforno explains that the essence of their complaint was rooted in the understanding that “mitzvah goreres mitzvah” – one mitzvah leads to the performance of another. These individuals understood the profound value and joy in fulfilling mitzvos, even though the observance of Pesach was not an easy task. They refused to accept exemption and felt a sense of loss without the opportunity to partake in this mitzvah.

This event in Parshas B’Haaloscha serves as a poignant reminder of the privilege and fortune we have in living a life of mitzvos. It teaches us that if circumstances prevent us from fulfilling a particular mitzvah, we should feel a genuine sense of diminishment. We should appreciate the value and interconnectedness of mitzvos, striving to engage in them to the best of our abilities. Our dedication to one mitzvah invariably leads us to the performance of others, thereby enhancing our spiritual growth and deepening our connection to Hashem.
