In their continuing effort to engage with leadership, Chazaq, the Queens-based organization dedicated to supporting the Jewish community, arranged a meeting with Ofir Akunis, the Consul General of Israel in New York. The focus of our discussions was particularly pressing: the challenges facing Jews in a post 10/7 world. Special emphasis was placed on Jewish students on America’s college campuses, with a spotlight on Columbia University.
Columbia University is home to a substantial Jewish population, and it has become a focal point for concerns about campus safety and anti-Semitism. During the meeting, Akunis emphasized the importance of collaboration with local police and the university administration to ensure the safety and well-being of Jewish students. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing rising tensions and fostering a supportive environment for all students.
The meeting was notable not just for its content but also for its attendees. Political leaders and activists from the Queens area, representing both Democratic and Republican parties, gathered to lend their voices to this critical issue. Among the participants were leaders from Queens College, illustrating the collaborative spirit necessary to tackle these challenges.
Ofir Akunis’s background adds depth to his role as Consul General. Having served as Israel’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology from 2015 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2024, he has a proven track record in leadership and reform. His efforts to expand technology access to underserved communities in Israel exemplify his commitment to inclusivity and progress. Additionally, his involvement in signing 30 international agreements demonstrates his dedication to strengthening ties between Israel and various nations, including the U.S.
Akunis’s tenure also includes notable achievements in international diplomacy. During his time as Minister of Regional Cooperation, he played a pivotal role in the historic Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states. This groundbreaking work reflects his ability to navigate complex political landscapes and forge meaningful connections.
As we face increasing challenges on college campuses, it is reassuring to have a leader like Akunis, who not only understands the issues but also actively seeks solutions. His proactive approach, along with the bipartisan support from local leaders, underscores the importance of unity in addressing anti-Semitism and ensuring a safe academic environment for Jewish students.
The meeting with Consul General Ofir Akunis was a pivotal moment in addressing the pressing issues faced by Jewish students today. By fostering collaboration between community organizations, political leaders, and educational institutions, we can work together to create a safe and supportive atmosphere for all students on our college campuses and all Jewish communities in New York
