Last month, Fleetwood, located in the southern Westchester city of Mount Vernon, welcomed its first kosher establishment in nearly 30 years.

It was a festive day, as the Swirls and Sweets ice cream and treat shop recently had its “Grand Kashering.” Hordes of people waited for the newly kosher eatery’s signature creations: crepes, waffles, açaí bowls, and of course, ice cream.

Rabbi Daniel Rosenfelt of the Fleetwood Synagogue headed the kashering process and supervision.

Residents were offered a 20% discount on this day by mentioning Fleetwood Synagogue. Eaters young and old delighted in freshly prepared crepes and waffles with various fillings such as bananas and cheesecake bites. For those wanting something cooler, açaí bowls, frozen yogurt, and ice cream was the way to go, with a variety of sauces, nuts, and candies to top off.

Swirls and Sweets is located down the block from the Fleetwood Synagogue, at 5 Broad Street W. in Mount Vernon, and is open daily from 12 noon until 9:00 p.m.
