In this week’s parshah, Pinchas demonstrated his zealousness for Hashem’s sake and was rewarded with the covenant of Shalom (Peace). This incident aligns with the Torah principle found in Makos 10b, which states that “in the way a man wishes to go, he is led.” According to this principle, if a person genuinely desires to grow spiritually and observe mitzvos (commandments), Hashem grants him the strength to fulfill those desires.

Pinchas, by taking decisive action to preserve peace, showed his true intentions and was therefore blessed with a “bris shalom,” a covenant of peace. This highlights the idea that when individuals demonstrate their commitment to righteousness and the pursuit of peace, Hashem rewards them accordingly.

Similarly, in T’hilim (Psalms) 119:62, David HaMelech (King David) proclaims that he arises at midnight to express gratitude for Hashem’s righteous ordinances. Chazal (the Sages of the Talmud) teach us that David HaMelech would wake up every night at midnight to sing and give praise to Hashem. He had a harp hung in his room, and at the same time each night, a northerly wind would blow through the strings, awakening him.

This miraculous event, where a natural phenomenon helped David HaMelech fulfill his desire to worship and connect with Hashem, signifies how Hashem assists those who sincerely wish to follow His will and grow spiritually. People with a genuine desire to walk the path of righteousness often receive Divine assistance, referred to as siyata diShmaya, which transcends the ordinary laws of nature. This extraordinary support enables them to continue their journey of righteousness and spiritual growth.

These examples from Parshas Pinchas and the life of David HaMelech highlight the concept that when individuals demonstrate their sincere desire to fulfill Hashem’s will, He provides them with the necessary strength, opportunities, and even miraculous assistance to facilitate their spiritual growth and observance of mitzvos.
