One year ago, our family was privileged to be allowed to enter Eretz Yisrael – despite extremely restrictive rules due to COVID-19 – to celebrate the wedding of our daughter Dana Aderet to Ben Glass of London, who met, and currently reside, in Baka, Yerushalayim, when both had made aliyah.

In this week’s parshah, it states: “Yisrael bowed towards the head of the bed” (47:31). Did Yaakov Avinu bow to his son [Yosef]? Rashi explains: Yaakov Avinu turned himself toward the head of the bed. Based on this, our Sages taught (Shabbos 12b): “The Shechinah resides above the head of an ill person.”

A century of family history came full circle on Shabbos Chanukah in Forest Hills. Linking past and present was a sefer Torah that survived transport across continents to its current makom in Queens. The present-day story began three years ago when Rabbi Michael Fuzaylov, who runs Emet Outreach’s Level 2 Men’s Division, and his wife Dina moved their family from Kew Gardens to Forest Hills. Their goal was to open their home to Emet students, many of whom live in the area, for meals and learning on Shabbos and Yom Tov.
