First-of-its-kind discussion in UAE to focus on peace, spirituality, and the climate crisis

On Sept. 21, Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, will headline a historic panel launching the first year of programming at the Abrahamic Family House (AFH) in Abu Dhabi titled “Rethinking Sustainability and Peace Through a Spiritual Lens.” The discussion, held on the International Day of Peace, will highlight YU’s continued commitment to deepening ties and spreading Jewish values in the global community. The other panelists include Dana Kamali, Chief Business Officer at UAE’s Corporate Social Responsibility Fund, which oversees the country’s sustainability efforts, and Dr. Monica Menendez, Associate Dean of Engineering for Graduate Affairs at NYU Abu Dhabi. The event will also include remarks by Mr. Abdulla Al Shehhi, Acting Executive Director of the Abrahamic Family House.

 During a press conference outside the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan addressing the migrant crisis, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic lawmakers faced loud heckling from protesters shouting “Send them back!” and “Close the border!” Despite the disruptions, Ocasio-Cortez discussed the need for resources to assist migrants and work authorizations to help them support themselves. The delegation also called for extending Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans. The Roosevelt Hotel serves as a relief center for asylum seekers, offering food, vaccinations, and caseworker meetings. The event highlighted the contentious issue of immigration as New York City grapples with a significant influx of migrants, leading Mayor Eric Adams to express concerns about its impact on the city’s resources and future.

Recap: Mr. Bowers is home and Hope finds out that Mrs. Bowers is his second wife, and that his first wife – Bonnie’s mother – passed away. She was Hope’s mother’s second cousin. Hope asks Mr. Bowers if she can go to her friend’s house for dinner and he says yes. Mrs. Bowers tells her to take Bonnie. Hope is happy to be able to go to the Jacobsons for Friday night dinner.

 New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced budget cuts of billions of dollars in response to the rising costs associated with the influx of tens of thousands of migrants into the city. All city agencies will have to reduce spending by 5% starting in November and 15% by the following spring; although no layoffs are planned, a hiring freeze is expected. These steep budget cuts, among the largest in years, are projected to impact various sectors, including public schools, the NYPD, the fire department, sanitation, and more.

We had the great honor of marketing a lovely apartment in Jerusalem’s Sha’are Chesed neighborhood for the estate of Yehuda Avner. Standing in Avner’s office and viewing numerous photos of him with leading world leaders felt like I was taking a stroll through the history of the State of Israel.

Recap: Hope takes Bonnie to Rivkah’s house and the girls are introduced to baking challah with the Jacobsons. Mrs. Jacobson invites the girls for Friday night dinner. Hope would love to go but doubts Mrs. Bowers will let her. She probably has to work at the Five and Dime store then.
