In this week’s parshah, Yosef revealed himself to his brothers after not seeing them for 22 years. The pasuk states: “Vayomer Yosef el echav: ‘Ani Yosef. Ha’od avi chai?’ V’lo yachlu echav laanos oso ki nivhalu mi’panav” – And Yosef said to his brothers: ‘I am Yosef. Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers could not answer him because they were left disconcerted before him (B’reishis 45:3).

A century of family history came full circle on Shabbos Chanukah in Forest Hills. Linking past and present was a sefer Torah that survived transport across continents to its current makom in Queens. The present-day story began three years ago when Rabbi Michael Fuzaylov, who runs Emet Outreach’s Level 2 Men’s Division, and his wife Dina moved their family from Kew Gardens to Forest Hills. Their goal was to open their home to Emet students, many of whom live in the area, for meals and learning on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

One year ago, our family was privileged to be allowed to enter Eretz Yisrael – despite extremely restrictive rules due to COVID-19 – to celebrate the wedding of our daughter Dana Aderet to Ben Glass of London, who met, and currently reside, in Baka, Yerushalayim, when both had made aliyah.
