There aren't many people who do volunteerism better than Dr. Ellie Bennett, "The KGH Doc." In conjunction with his work on behalf of Hatzolah, the good doctor was dispatched to Israel to assist Magen David Adom in their medical response, as many of the regular medical volunteers are on assignment with the IDF.
Over the past week, Dr. Bennett found himself responding to terror attacks in the south of Israel. He literally jumped from rocket attack to rocket attack assisting the injured while clad in a bulletproof vest and protective helmet. "If I hear the sirens and I'm not near a bomb shelter, I have to lay down on the streets with my hands over my head and pray not to be blown to bits," said Bennett. "I'm not asking for sympathy. This is what I signed up to do with my life. But, all of our millions of brothers and sisters in Israel didn't sign up for this. They just want to be left alone and live a peaceful and normal life."
"I don't have all the answers to the Middle East problems," expressed Dr. Bennett, "but I've yet to meet a person in Israel that is happy about the killing of innocent civilians in Gaza. Yet, I have to watch Jews hide in a college campus library to avoid a menacing mob, and see thousands of people show up to a protest in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, only a stone's throw from my home in Queens. And what do I hear at these rallies? I hear bloodthirsty mobs screaming for my death. Yes, many are chanting to free Palestine. But, a very large portion are begging for Jewish blood worldwide while taunting us with comments about gas chambers, and showing Nazi propaganda. I've probably taken care of their family members at some point in my 25-year career, and I would do it again because that's what it means to be a Jew. Life is sacrosanct. Israel will do what it must to protect her citizens, and I will try to play my part. But don't confuse which side is calling for wholesale murder and which side just wants to be left alone. Separate politics from reality and pray for the innocent. (Once you're praying, please have me and my team in mind)."
