Learn practical ways to support those facing illness and bring comfort to those in need

As we enter the month of Elul and prepare for the Yamim Nora’im, the entire community is invited to strengthen their practice of the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim. This Sunday evening, September 7, at 8:00 p.m., a community gathering will take place at the Young Israel of Queens Valley, 141-55 77th Avenue in Kew Gardens Hills. The event – open to both men and women, and with no solicitations – will highlight practical ways to assist those facing health challenges.

It was the Jewish heritage trip of a lifetime when 45 Emet Outreach students visited Prague, Poland, and Vienna this summer. The itinerary celebrated Jewish survival from the midst of destruction, and the lessons resonated across generations. It was an eight-day experience that left participants with gratitude for their Jewish heritage, an appreciation of their daily lives, and a determination to strengthen their connection to Hashem.

Parshas Ki Savo begins with the words: “Ki savo el ha’aretz asher Hashem Elokecha nosein l’cha – When you come into the land that Hashem, your G-d, is giving you.” The parshah opens with the mitzvah of bringing bikurim, the first fruits, as a heartfelt declaration of gratitude. It reminds us that everything we have is a gift from Hashem, and our role is to recognize, thank, and sanctify His blessings.

Parshas Ki Seitzei begins with the words: “Ki seitzei la’milchamah al oyvecha – When you go out to war against your enemies.” The Torah reminds us that life itself is full of battles – sometimes external, but often internal. Each of us faces struggles, challenges, and tests, and Hashem assures us that with His help, we can emerge victorious.
