On Motzaei Shabbos, January 11, Young Israel of Hillcrest hosted its second annual Game Night, Playing for Our Land, to raise funds for essential equipment for the chayalim serving in the IDF. The event brought together over 80 community members for an evening filled with games, food, and camaraderie, all to support a meaningful cause.
Attendees enjoyed popular games such as Scrabble, Mahjong, Rummikub, and more, while the evening maintained a strong connection to Israel. Rabbinical intern Rabbi Yoni Laub inspired participants with heartfelt words and led the community in reciting T'hilim (Psalms), reinforcing the event’s mission of solidarity with Israel.
The night was filled with laughter, music, and prizes. A delicious dairy meal was catered by Naomi’s Kosher Pizza & Falafel, and the beautiful melodies performed by Rabbi Moshe Shur’s musical ensemble added a special touch. The program also featured group bingo, a trivia contest, and an exciting raffle prize drawing.
Generous donations from local businesses significantly contributed to the event's success. Vendors including Annie’s Kitchen, Aron’s Kissena Farms, Café Motek Bakery, Chief Smokehouse, @Fit_by_Aviva, Holy Schnitzel, Hot Spot, Milk n' Honey (Manhattan), Motek Spa Inc., Naomi’s Kosher Pizza & Falafel, Otoro, Karen Schwartz (music teacher), Smash House Burgers, SoySauce, and Union Bistro provided raffle prizes.
Event organizers Rachel and Ron Levovitz and Margie Schikman, with the support of Rabbi Etan Schnall and the Young Israel of Hillcrest, highlighted the power of games in fostering community spirit. Their hard work, combined with the generosity of sponsors and vendors, ensured the event’s success in raising funds for Israel.
Participants were reluctant to see the evening come to an end. One attendee remarked, “Do you think we can stay longer and keep playing?” Another shared, “I’m so happy we could raise so much for Israel. It’s wonderful to see everyone come together like this.”
The event not only raised funds but also fostered a deep sense of achdus (unity) and love for Israel. Young Israel of Hillcrest’s Game Night was a heartwarming and impactful event, bringing the community closer while supporting a vital cause.
