At 4 o’clock in the afternoon, my wife and I gathered along with several thousand other Rehovotites to pay our final respects to Sergeant Ronal Ben Moshe. Ronal fell with six of his comrades in the Israel Defense Corps Battalion 605, part of the 188th Brigade Combat Team, fighting to detoxify Gaza from the curse of Hamas. Like most of the attendees, we didn’t know Ronal personally. Nevertheless, he was our child. We learned about the strength, wit, energy, heroism, and big smile that characterized this 20-year-old. Our eyes glistened as we listened to his officers, father, brother, sisters, and many friends eulogize him. His loss is devastating to his loved ones, and every one of us shares in their grief.

Turning on the phones after Shabbos ended this week came with some of the best news imaginable for anyone who cheers for a safer world. It’s also the worst news imaginable for anyone who seeks the destruction of Israel and the retreat and isolation of America.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York Democratic Primary was not about anti-Semitism but about generational change. That should give us even more cause for concern.

At 3 a.m. this morning, my wife and I were roused from slumber by a loud, high-pitched warning on our cell phone, heralding the imminent triggering of air raid sirens. We navigated the short distance to our safe room (mamad), locked the heavy metal door that secured its entrance, and huddled together on the sofa. Air raid sirens shrieked, followed by booms which rattled our surroundings. Twenty to thirty minutes later, an all-clear signal permitted us to go back to sleep.
