Sam Berger, a yeshiva graduate and moderate Democrat, has emerged as a prominent candidate for the Assembly District 27 seat, which covers Pomonok, Electchester, Kew Gardens Hills, College Point, and Whitestone. Berger aims to assume the open seat following the resignation of former Assemblyman Dan Rosenthal. Rosenthal, who presided over AD 27 since 2017, formally endorsed Berger following his departure in July. Berger’s unique background and long-standing commitment to his community make him a compelling choice to assume the role of Assemblyman.

Born and raised in District 27’s Kew Gardens Hills, Sam Berger, or Shmuie as he is affectionately known locally, walks the streets of his home neighborhood with a love of its residents and an affection for its local culture.  Learning regularly in Kollel Ohr Yisrael at the Beis Medrash of Kew Gardens Hills, he maintains a unique connection with the young adults who are the lifeblood of the neighborhood. His upbringing in a frum family deeply rooted in the Queens community has instilled in him a profound understanding of the plights faced by both the Orthodox residents and the district’s population as a whole. His parents have made significant contributions to the area, with his father serving as the president of Bnos Malka Academy and his mother a beloved science teacher at Shevach High School.

Berger studied abroad in Israel, learning for several years at Yeshivas Bircas Hatorah in the old city of Jerusalem.  He later returned to his roots to settle in the neighborhood he grew up in and pursue his law degree at Queens’ St. John’s University. His legal background, including externships with the Queens County Supreme Court, as well as with the Kings County Surrogate’s Court, has equipped him with valuable skills and knowledge to effectively serve his constituents.

Public safety lies at the heart of Berger’s vision for a thriving community. Drawing from his experiences in the Queens County Supreme Court’s criminal term, Berger fully comprehends the far-reaching impact of violent offenses on families and neighborhoods. His commitment to confronting hate crimes, vehicle theft, robberies, as well as public nuisances and quality of life issues, sets him apart as a leader ready to tackle the pressing safety concerns facing the district.

Berger’s public safety plan revolves around advocating for more robust police resources. He firmly believes that a secure community is a flourishing community, where families feel safe, and police are respected. “Peace of mind isn’t a privilege, but a right,” he states, highlighting the core principle that drives his approach to public safety.

Having experienced firsthand the transformative power of education, Sam Berger is dedicated to improving the resources available to local schools, both public and private, while combating the intrusion of unnecessary oversight and regulations that often hinder, rather than help, students’ growth.  He recognizes that learning needs constant support coupled with creativity and initiatives for improvement, and that it doesn’t end with the school bell, that the expansion of after-school programs in every community is a necessity not a luxury, so as to provide a safe and engaging environment for children throughout the day.

Berger envisions an educated community as the backbone of progress and success, ready to face the challenges of our times with confidence.  He sees good yeshiva day school education, as well as good public school education, as the key to unlock children’s natural creativity and affinity towards positive community involvement, connectivity and growth, and the shield against bad behavior and poor life choices.

Berger acknowledges the financial burden faced by families in New York City and is committed to advocating for policies that make living in the city affordable for working families, yet profitable for business. Additionally, Berger highlights the invaluable contributions of seniors to the community and is determined to promote policies and programs that guarantee them the best possible care and support during their retirement years.

With his unique blend of legal expertise, cultural awareness, and commitment to community values, Berger is poised to be a dedicated advocate for Assembly District 27. His vision for education, public safety, and affordability, together with his commitment to core family values, aligns with the needs and aspirations of his constituents, promising a brighter future for all residents.

In the upcoming Special election, residents of Assembly District 27 have a chance to elect a frum candidate who embodies the spirit and resilience of their community, a candidate who has the knowledge and strength of character to deliver: Sam Berger.
